About us
Leaving agriculture, Ron and a partner, started a small sub contract fencing business. They were soon working for major fencing contractors on projects like, motorway fencing on the M2 and Swanley bypass.
The partnership broke up and on leaving school, oldest son Tony, joined his father in 1965, forming R Brooks and Son. They were always busy, taking on contracts in their own right as well as sub contracting for the major contractors. Landscaping also became part of the operations.
Sub contract work was carried out for the Property Services Agency covering Chatham Dockyard and all the Military bases in Kent.
With all this work coming in they had to employ extra staff and the business began to grow. Mum, Elsie ran the office and was the wages clerk, typist, telephonist and most importantly, made the tea and cakes!

In 1974, after completing an apprenticeship at GEC as an electronics engineer, second son, Tim Brooks joined the partnership, now forming, R Brooks and Sons. Whilst maintaining their core customer base, housing contracts were won, including 12 construction sites for Wimpey Homes.
In April 1980, having out grown the yard in the Medway Towns, the business moved to Tuesnoad Farm Bethersden, giving a far better working radius as contracts were covered from Sussex, Surrey and London as well as all of Kent.
In 1990, Ron and Elsie semi-retired, taking a back seat, Tim took overall responsibility for the day to day running of the business with his wife Janice, now the secretary. Tony continued to keep the mechanical equipment in order and lead one of the teams. In 1996, Ron fully retired, moving with Elsie from Tuesnoad to their retirement bungalow in Ash near Sandwich.
Today’s customer base includes, Major House Builders, Ashford Borough Council, Letting Agents, Kent Police, Construction Companies as well as the Domestic Market and one off Commercial / Industrial Contracts.
